Italian Culture & Delights
This tour explores two of Florence’s most important basilicas, Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce, and the role of the Dominican and Franciscan orders in supporting the Church and shaping medieval society.
Both churches became true “treasure chests” of art, where medieval imagery gradually evolved into Renaissance painting. Here Giotto first broke with the Byzantine tradition, introducing a new sense of space and emotion, later developed by Masaccio with his revolutionary use of perspective, and refined by Ghirlandaio with rich narrative detail and portraits of Florentine life.
Together, these basilicas reveal how faith, religious orders, and artistic innovation transformed medieval art into the language of the Renaissance.
