Michelangelo and the Popes: The Vatican Museums & St. Peter’s Basilica
This tour explores the Vatican Museums through the life, mind, and ambitions of Michelangelo, tracing his complex relationship with Pope Julius II and the artistic path that led to the creation of the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
Inside the Vatican Museums, we follow Michelangelo’s earliest steps in Rome, discovering the beginnings of the Vatican collections and the classical sculptures that shaped his artistic vision. Ancient masterpieces, ideals of beauty, and powerful papal commissions all played a role in forming the language that would later emerge on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
We will also admire the genius of Raphael, who marvelously decorated the Papal Apartments at the same time as Michelangelo was working at the Sistine Chapel. Two absolute geniuses working virtually next door to each other!
The tour concludes in St. Peter’s Basilica, with a focused visit to Michelangelo’s Pietà, reflecting on how his early influences, struggles, and faith culminated in one of the most moving sculptures in the history of art.
A Vatican Museums tour with a dedicated focus on Michelangelo, his patrons, and the masterpieces that shaped his legacy.
A very exclusive, totally private, early entrance at the Vatican Museums, before official opening hours is also available. Please enquire for more details.
